Compare paint and Exterior Wall Coatings

Exterior wall coating choices

Paint once a year, or have a NEVER PAINT AGAIN wall coating every 15 years?

If you are “in the market” at present for home decorating, and the exterior of the house looks shabby, its wide not to underestimate how different exterior painting (etc) is than interior painting!
We discuss the various choices on offer…….

Painting internally is something that most people with minimal skill and expertise can complete relatively well, and if the hardest part was choosing which shade or colour, one look at the exterior of the house makes many people realise that painting exterior walls is not as as easy as decorating a room!

For a start, interior paint does not have to repel rain, cold, snow or frost and most internal walls that require repair before painting, can easily be repaired with a bit of filler and some sandpaper from B&Q! However exterior house paint and coating need to be weatherproof, durable and resistant to rain and all other types of inclement weather or they simply wont last.

What choices are there on the market?

Is normal paint any good? Let’s compare!

Much of the DIY paint available in the shops have very little waterproofing in them, because partly the paint shops and factories that make paint, want you to keep buying it every year.

Masonry paint is also designed to be fairly easy to apply, so if you have basic house painting experience, it is something that you can do fairly easily, but if repairs are needed, often a builder needs to be called before you can paint.

Masonry paint will not cure damp, plus if you live in an exposed area, for example the Yorkshire moors, or by the sea, the paint really wont last very long at all, so masonry paint is only a quick fix cheap solution that will not last much more than about 2 years.

The solution is, in our opinion, a spray applied, coloured exterior wall coating which not only does need to be re-applied every two years (it lasts for up to 20 years), it also cures damp and will not fade, crack, chip or peel.

before_and_after exterior wall coatingsWhat is so good about Exterior wall coatings?

Most external house walls, especially on older houses, have repairs that are necessary before any decoration, and the repairs often come from wall erosion, poor maintenance, or just simply not having the correct durable covering to the walls of the house.

NEVER PAINT AGAIN exterior wall coatings are also breathable, which is crucial in maintaining a good ambient temperature inside the house, and allowing water vapour to escape, whilst banning damp from entering the inside of the house, Paint doesn’t do this.

Different sorts of external wall coatings.

In the main, the sort or type of coating suitable for the exterior walls of your house really depend on the wall surface which exists already.

Our most popular exterior wall coating choice and the very same product, made by Andura, that we have been using since 1986, way before the internet even got off the ground in the Uk, so we know about how to use this product inside-out!

The wall coating service comes with a complete wall repair, if needed, which includes repointing, wall rendering, tyrolean repair, replacing loose and cracked pebbledash, and a full damp proof treatment all in one. The system doesn’t fade, crack, chip or peel and lasts for up to 20 years!

Transparent liquid damp resisting waterproof coatings

It has special dispersing agents added to give maximum depth of penetration into the wall. This durable waterproof wall coating is IDEAL for those who wish to protect their homes from damp, erosion and the wet weather. The product has also been proven to halt the effects of EROSION in your walls.

If you have a natural stone house or unpainted brick, you may want to go for one of the invisible silicone based wall coatingsavailable which will cure erosion, and crucially stop damp.

Coloured render based high strength insulating wall coatings

GRC coloured rendering, a weatherproof, insulated, polymer-modified, coloured through render wall coating system for exterior walls, applied by skilled, factory trained technicians and available from Never Paint Again.

GRC coloured render is a high performance coloured render based exterior wall coating system, manufactured in Belgium by Cantillana, and applied by the plastering division of Never Paint Again.

Is that enough choices for you?

It doesn’t matter what exterior wall covering your house has just now, the teams at NEVER PAINT Again can advise you on which coating is the most suitable for your home, and can explain, in normal language (!), how each coating is applied, the specific benefits of each one, and how much each one costs.

As a rough guide, normal masonry paint is of course the cheapest but poorest performing, then the clear silicone wall coatings are the cheapest that we apply, followed by our coloured spray applied wall coatings which are the most POPULAR CHOICE, and then finally our “rolls-Royce” of external wall coatings, the super tough coloured render which although costing more, the insulation benefits mean you will recoup your investment in lower heating bills.
